A month-long tribute to the late Mayor Harold Washington begins Friday.

April marks the 30th-anniversary of Washington’s election as the first African-American mayor of Chicago.

A group of politicians, civil rights and religious leaders formed a committee to honor his legacy. They’ll start with a news conference Friday morning at the Ramada Lake Shore, the same hotel where Washington announced his campaign in November of 1982.

Then, Friday evening, a 30th anniversary reception will be held at the Marmon Grand Hotel on South Michigan.

The city council has declared April 15th Harold Washington Day in the city.

The observance includes a number of forums at area universities and a closing celebration on April 29.

Washington died in November, 1987 shortly after winning a second term.
